…’’These are some of the new varieties of tomato that Songhaï has been experimenting recently on the Regional Centre of Porto-Novo. The seeds planted a month ago are from Holland. But other varieties from France were already under experimentation. These include “Noire de Crimée or black tomato”, “Russian giant or red tomato’ Olirose de saint Dominique or tomate rose”; “Blondkopfchen or tomate cerise jaune”; “platinum 701”; “Ginette” etc.
These last varieties, especially Noire de Crimée, l’Olirose de Saint Domingue et la Blondkopfchen, the performance is quite encouraging and promising.
For all the varieties, the vegetative cycle is 3 months. We are then waiting to assess the overall performance of these new varieties which, when compared to ordinary tomatoes, are different in size, colour, shape and yield of the fruit.
All the varieties under experimentation are cultivated using the Rameal Chipped Woods farming system, a soil fertilisation and conservation technique that Songhai has been practising recently. |
