Named after a prestigious West African empire founded between the XIVth and the XVIth century, Songhai is a non governmental organisation established in 1985 by Africans and a group of African friends. The idea to establish this NGO originates from the miserable situation of Africa in terms of development. Indeed, the continent lives in a situation of under development with problems like rural exodus, food insufficiency, brain drain, environmental degradation, non valorisation of the opportunity for economic growth, subsistence agriculture… This dark chart is illustrated by a decrease in productivity (2.5%) coupled with a soaring population growth (3.6%).
The initiators of this project of new society were therefore concerned with bringing Africa in a logic of development which consists in initiating new forces in spite of its socio economic constraint. The key to this revolution is the conversion of the continent’s comparative advantages to competitive advantages centred on a real integrated, sustainable socio economic development, a development of African human resources capacities (agricultural entrepreneurship) and a renaissance of dynamic values which made the Songhai empire ( in today’s Mali), a famous and prosperous empire.
In other words, SONGHAI is a training, production, research, and development centre in sustainable agriculture. It aims at improving the living standards of the African people for a sustainable socio-economic development.
- by using local resources, traditional and modern methods, - by rationalising them, - by practising a strict management, - by stimulating the taking up of responsibility and initiative through dialogue and consultation for the creation of a viable agricultural enterprises.
RESOURCES
On one hand, they come from the resources of Songhai’s own productions and on the other hand from the contributions of various technical partners. Songhai invests most of its resources in financing production activities while a little part is invested in administrative expenses. The final objective is to become 100% financially self sufficient. Songhai is an institution which is set to rely on its own efforts and finance its projects out of the resources gotten from its activities. Apart from its own resources, the various achievements attained by Songhai are supported by several partners. |
