At Songhai, two types of fish farming are practiced, basins and ponds.
On the Porto-Novo site, the fish are raised in small ponds and basins,
whereas on the Parakou site, where 46 hectares are dedicated to fish
farming activities, they are raised in floating cages housed in a
large manmade lake.
The different species of fish raised are as follows:
Tilapia (nilotica and auria)
Catfish (heterobronchus and clarius)
To reduce feeding costs, housefly larvae are collected internally.
Each month, around 4 - 6 tons of larvae are produced as fish food.
Also, to further reduce feeding expenses, we produce daphnies
and add them to the feed.
The following are some fish farming benefits from agricultural
production: cassava roots and maize stalk are fed to the fishes
and the intestines of animals slaughtered for sale are transformed
into granules and added to the feed composition. The water from
the ponds is rich in minerals and is used to water the vegetable
gardens.
